Topwater fishing lures are specifically designed to attract fish that feed near the surface of the water. These baits imitate the movements of prey such as insects, frogs or small bait fish that on the surface of the water. Anglers use topwater lures to target a variety of species including bass, trout, pike and other fish.
Here are some common types of lures for topwater fishing:
Popper: A popper is a lure with a concave or cupped surface that creates a popping or splashing sound when retrieved. Anglers use the "pop and stop" technique by pulling on the rod tip to make the lure make a popping sound, imitating a playing or wounded baitfish. The commotion attracts the fish to attack the surface.
Topwater Walker: This type of lure has a flat or concave face and is designed to walk back and forth on the surface of the water when retrieved. Anglers achieve this action by twitching the rod tip, causing the lure to move in a zigzag motion, resembling a wounded baitfish. The side-to-side movement creates a subtle disturbance on the surface, triggering predatory instincts in the fish.
Buzzbait: A buzzbait consists of a spinning propeller attached to the front of a leader head. When removed, the propeller spins, creating a buzzing or gurgling sound and leaving a visible mark on the surface of the water. This attracts fish by simulating a small creature moving through the water.
Pencil Popper: The Pencil Popper is a long, thin lure with a pointed shape resembling a pencil or cigar. It is designed to cast long distances and mimic a wounded or fleeing baitfish when retrieved. The pencil popper creates a subtle popping sound and splash, attracting fish to the surface.
Frog Imitations: These lures are designed to look like frogs or other amphibians that often inhabit the water's edge. They usually have soft, lifelike bodies and have hooks hidden in the lure. When worked on the surface, frog imitations create a realistic swimming motion, attracting fish looking for an easy meal.
Floating Minnows: Floating minnows have a thin, elongated body and a lip (blade) that allows them to dive slightly below the surface. When retrieved, they create a fluttering or darting action similar to a wounded or struggling baitfish. These lures are effective in targeting species such as sea bass, trout and more.
Be sure to match the size and color of the lure to the prey species in the area and the preferences of the fish you're after. Also, pay attention to water conditions such as temperature, clarity, and the presence of vegetation or structure, as these factors can affect the performance of various surface lures
When using topwater lures it is important to consider the time of day and prevailing weather conditions. Early mornings, late afternoons and overcast days tend to be more productive for surface fishing as fish tend to be more active near the surface during these times.
Be sure to experiment with different retrieve speeds, pauses, and techniques to determine what works best for the species you're targeting and the conditions you're fishing.
